My Journey as a Type 2 Diabetic
My doctor’s appointment that day had nothing to do with diabetes—or so I thought. I was there to discuss some troubling symptoms: constant hunger despite eating, frequent urination (especially at night), relentless thirst, and occasional dizziness. After explaining my concerns, my doctor asked me for a urine sample and checked my blood sugar. The results came back alarmingly high—500. He looked at me and said firmly, “You have diabetes.” I laughed nervously, repeating his words as if testing their weight. “I’m diabetic? What does that mean?
His expression grew even more serious. “Your blood sugar is so high; you need to go to the hospital right now,” he said. Still, I chuckled, not fully grasping the gravity of the situation. But his following words wiped the smile from my face: “You’re lucky you’re not in a coma.” I couldn’t believe it. Shocked and in denial, I decided to forgo the hospital and instead made an appointment with my general practitioner closer to home—five hours away. After further lab tests, I heard the confirmation once again: “You have Type 2 Diabetes.”
The reality was impossible to ignore. My life had just taken an unexpected turn, and I was only beginning to understand what itmeant. When I was first diagnosed with diabetes, it felt like my worldwas turned upside down.
Hearing those words was incredibly hard, and adjusting to the realityof my new lifestyle was even more complex. Everyday choices, likegrocery shopping or ordering a simple cup of coffee, suddenly became confusing and stressful. I felt like I was navigating a maze without a map. But as time passed, I realized that this diagnosis wasn’t the end—it was an opportunity to adapt and thrive.
Thankfully, with so many restaurants and public eateries now offeringhealthier options, there are more ways than ever to manage diabetes without feeling deprived. I had to rethink how I shopped, ordered food, and enjoyed simple pleasures. It wasn’t easy, and at times, it was overwhelming. But through research, trial and error, and plenty of determination, I discovered ways to navigate this journey without losing the joy in life’s little moments.
I wrote these books to share what I’ve learned, hoping it will make your journey smoother and maybe even a bit sweeter. Let this guide be your companion in making healthier choices—while still enjoying the things you love, one cup, one pastry and one meal at a time.
I didn't see myself this big but i did feel unhealthy. It has not been an easy journey but I am getting there.
I am better and working on it daily! Growing up eating flour tortillas and tacos it is a daily struggle but I am continuing to go forward with making better food choices for my body.
